New Paper on progressing youth to senior in Athletics

We have lastly handled to get this paper accepted as well as published on the Journal of science as well as medicine in Sport. This was part of a larger research study conducted with colleagues in Italy to “map” historical data of Italian Athletics as well as figure out progressions in different athletics events to differentiate between successful as well as non successful adult performers by analysing the longitudinal advancements of such results.

The very first part of this work was published last year on PlosOne. In this recent work we focused on sprints as well as throws events analysing male as well as female progressions with a lot more than 5000 athletes present in the Italian official results database offered in FIDAL.

The paper is entitled:”Elite national athletes reach their height performance later than non-elite in sprints as well as throwing events”

A overall of 5929 athletes (female: n = 2977, 50.2%) were included in the study. The age of entering competition as well as personal finest performance was determined in the official competition records. personal finest performances were placed in percentiles as well as top-level athletes were thought about those in the greatest 4% of the performance distribution.

Overall, when controlling for the age of entering competition, top-level athletes reached their personal finest later (i.e., around 23–25 years old) for all events compared to the rest of the athletes. Moreover, regression analysis showed that entering competitions later was linked to much better performances during adulthood. Also, only 17%–26% [90% CI] of the top-level adult athletes were thought about as such when they were 14–17 years old.

These findings as well as previous ones in other events likewise type other research study groups (like this from our Norwegian colleagues) suggest that early sport success is not a strong predictor of top-level performance at senior level. Also, gender differences may be obvious in the rate of performance advancement in different events.

Such analyses are crucial to establish recommendation databases to examine young athletes progression as well as be able to prevent de-selection of late maturers.

I will speak about this technique in a talk in Aspetar in January 2019. before then, I will compose a lot more about this on the blog as I believe it is crucial to have a a lot more systematic look at youth performances around the world in Athletics in buy to determine patterns as well as supply a lot more possibilities to examine athletes’ progressions.
